Ellipse

Ellipse started as a polyrhythm exercise, roughly imitating West African traditions. As the patterns gained melodies, I pared back the number of voices. The result is a different type of piece, but there are a couple places where some of the original rhythms have been piled on. It was intended as an instrumental, with melody played on bass guitar, but I wrote some throwaway words so Maria could sing it.

Maria Alejandra Velasquez Restrepo – voice
David Sossa Fernández – guitar
Brenda Lohrenz – keyboard
Buff Allen – drums and percussion

~*~*~*~*~*~

Its been a long time to wait
’til this moment has come.

Almost forgot –
Mundane concerns eclipsed it from mind,

While all along, wheeling slow,
Machinery turns across the sky,
inevitably…

Its coming soon,
Its coming soon,
The occasion is nigh.

I feel it now,
Even though
I cannot recall
exactly where
the frisson comes from.

Its coming soon,
Its coming soon,
The fullness has come.

it is here,
it is here,
right on time:

The doe-eyed moon
Is lifting clear,
Tracing a course
To curve back down to bed.

It was a long time to wait.
Already its past,
Slipping back into shade.

Around it goes
Once again,
Exactly the same,
And yet it feels
Contracted this time.

Its coming soon,
Its coming soon,
The occasion is nigh.

This time around,
Feel it come from farther away,
Emerging from
The wash of the days.

Its coming soon,
Its coming soon,
The fullness has come.

it is here,
it is here,
right on time:

The swollen tide
O’er flows the beach,
Already ebbing back
From whence it came.
